HIRA AND MOTI CLASS 4 story

Long ago, there lived a farmer in a village. His name was Jhuri. He had a pair of oxen. He called them Heera and Moti. He loved them very much. The oxen also loved each other. They loved their master Jhuri, too.

One day Jhuri’s brother-in-law came there. His name was Gaya. He asked for the oxen. Jhuri gave him the oxen unwillingly. Heera and Moti became very sad. They did not want to go. But Gaya dragged them to his village. In the night, they broke the rope and ran back. Jhuri became very happy to see them.

Gaya came again to take them. Heera and Moti resisted. But he pulled them away with force. He punished them. They had to plough the field for long. They had to eat only husk and no oil cakes. They were sad and angry.

Gaya had a little daughter. She loved Heera and Moti. She gave them bread to eat. She felt their sorrow. One night she untied their ropes. Heera and Moti ran away. They were very hungry. Both entered a field of peas. But they were pushed out on the road. They met a big angry bull. He attacked them. They fought with him bravely and won. But their misery did not end with this.

They were kept in a kine-house. Moti tried to break the wall and ran away. But the master of the kine-house caught them again. He sold them to a butcher. The butcher began to take them to his house. Both of the oxen were very sad. They ran fast and reached Jhuri’s house. The butcher ran after them. Jhuri and other villagers asked him not to create any trouble and go away. So the butcher returned.

Now, Jhuri was very happy to see them back. He began to pat their backs. His wife also came there. She kissed Heera and Moti on their foreheads.

A. Warmer

Have you ever played any trick on anyone? What was it? Discuss it in groups.

There was once a shepherd boy. He watched over his sheep everyday. While the sheep ate grass, he passed the time in his own way. He would see how far he could throw a stone or look at the clouds. He would see how many animal shapes he could find in clouds.

He liked his job well enough, but he longed for a little excitement. So one day he decided to play a trick on the people of the village.

“Wolf! Wolf!” he shouted as loud as he could. The people in the village heard his cry. They picked up pitchforks and clubs and ran to help the boy. When they arrived they saw no wolf. They saw only the shepherd boy doubled up with laughter.

I fooled you! I fooled you!” he cried.

The people thought this was a very bad joke indeed. ‘Don’t call again unless he really saw a wolf,’  they warned the boy.

The next week the boy again played his trick on the villagers.

               “Wolf! Wolf!” he cried out.

Once again the people ran to his aid, and they found no wolf. The boy laughed at them, once again.

The next day a wolf really did come down from the hills. “Wolf! Wolf!” yelled the shepherd boy with all the power in his lungs.

The people of the village heard his shouts for help and smiled. “He’s trying to trick us again”, they said, “but this time we won’t be fooled”.

Finally, the boy stopped shouting. He knew the villagers didn’t believe him. He knew they wouldn’t come. All he could do was hide while the wolf killed his sheep.

I quarrelled with my brother,

I don’t know what about,

One thing led to another

And somehow we fell out.

The start of it was slight,

The end of it was strong,

He said he was right,

I knew he was wrong !

We hated one another.

The afternoon turned black.

Then suddenly my brother

Thumped me on the back,

And said, ‘oh, come along !

We can’t go on all night-

I was in the wrong.’

“I thought I was in the dream world”, uttered Lalita when her photograph was published on the cover page of UNICEF World Report released by the noted actress shabana Azmi. She was so happy that she found herself to be nothing sort of a celebrity, why not? After all, she got this happiness after a long struggle.

Lalita was born in 1988 in a poor family in a remote village of Sitamarhi. Like other children, she also wanted to study. But her parents were not ready to send her to a school. Although her parents did not allow her to study, she began to attend a Jagjagi Kendra in 2000 while gathering firewood. When her mother saw her attending classes at the Kendra, she scolded her. She was also beaten up by her brother while doing so. But this did not stop her from continuing her education.

With the support of the local Sahyogini, Lalita joined Mahila Shikshan Kendra, run by Mahila Samakhya at Sitamarhi. The Mahila Samakhaya noticed Lalita’s interest in Karate. So, in 2002, she was sent for a month to  Hazaribagh for receiving training in Karate. And, there she got the blue belt. In 2003, she was again sent to Hazaribagh and this time she got the brown belt.

Presently, Lalita has been a second year college student. She has also been selected as a teacher (Prakhand Shikshika). The success story of Lalita is a real example for those who live in hardships and yet desire to reach the top of the world.

                               THE LITTLE RED HEN

A. Warmer

Have you ever seen your mother making chapatis ? Have you ever helped her ? What steps does she take to make them ?

One day the Little Red Hen was scratching in the farmyard, when she found some grains of wheat.

Who will plant the wheat?” said she.

Not I,” said the duck.

Not I,” said the cat.

Not I,” said the dog.

Very well then,” said the Little Red Hen. “I will.” So she planted the grains of wheat.

After some time the wheat grew tall and ripe.

Who will cut the wheat?” said she.

Not I,” said the duck.

Not I,” said the cat.

Not I,” said the dog.

Very well then, I will.” said the Little Red Hen. So she cut the wheat.

Now” she said, “Who will thresh the wheat?”

Not I,” said the duck.

Not I,” said the cat.

Not I,” said the dog.

Very well then, I will.” said the Little Red Hen. So she threshed the wheat.

When the wheat was threshed, she said,

Who will take the wheat to the mill to have it ground into flour?

Not I,” said the duck.

Not I,” said the cat.

Not I,” said the dog.

Very well then, I will.” said the Little Red Hen. So she took the wheat to the mill, ground the wheat into flour and carried it back to the farm all by herself.

By now, the Little Red Hen was tired. “Who will help me bake the bread?” she asked.

Not I,” said the duck.

Not I,” said the cat.

Not I,” said the dog.

Very well then, I will.” said the Little Red Hen. So she baked the bread all by herself.

When the bread was finished, the Little Red Hen asked, “Who will help me eat the bread ?

“ I will,” said the duck.

I will,” said the cat.

I will,” said the dog.

Oh, no you won’t”, said the Little Red Hen. “I will.

And she called her chicks and shared the bread with them.
